80% of people think it’s a scam or that they won’t qualify…
In a time when energy prices remain unpredictable and the climate crisis accelerates, help is out there, but most people don’t know it exists. A new local survey conducted in Lancashire reveals that only 2 in 10 residents are aware of the energy-saving grants available to them.
Even more alarming: of those few who are aware, nearly 80% either believe the schemes are a scam or wrongly assume they won’t qualify.
This widespread misconception means thousands of households are unknowingly missing out on support that could significantly reduce their energy bills, improve their home’s comfort, and contribute to the UK’s goal of reaching net zero by 2050.
At One Energy, our mission is simple: to make sure no eligible family misses out.
Busting the Myths: These Grants Are Real – And You Might Qualify
There’s a prevailing myth that these grants are only available to those on benefits, or that the application process is confusing, time-consuming, or simply too good to be true. But under schemes like ECO4, GBIS, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) and the new Warm Homes Local Grant, help is available to a much wider group than many think – including homeowners and private tenants who are struggling with high bills or live in properties with low energy ratings.
For example:
- The Warm Homes Local Grant supports local authorities to deliver upgrades like insulation, solar panels, and low-carbon heating to low-income households – whether you’re on gas, oil, or electric.
- ECO4 and GBIS continue to fund insulation and heating measures across England, with new rules allowing more combinations of improvements and better flexibility.
- The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has been supercharged in 2025 with additional funding and a push to include third-party financing models to help more people benefit from heat pumps and modern heating tech.
So yes – the grants are real, and they’re funded by the government. But the clock is ticking. You can read more about the grants available from the UK Government by clicking here.

Political Uncertainty: Why It’s Important to Act Now
With growing political traction for parties like Reform UK, who have taken a more sceptical stance on net zero policies, there’s increasing uncertainty around how long these grants will remain available in their current form.
One Energy’s founder, speaking on this issue, said:
“We believe energy-saving grants are a vital lifeline for our communities, not only to cut bills but to improve health and comfort in the home. But with political change on the horizon, it’s more important than ever that local people come forward and claim what they’re entitled to, before it’s too late.”
More Statistics: The Energy Burden in Lancashire
Lancashire faces significant challenges related to fuel poverty and low-income households. Recent data evidenced by Lancashire County Council reveals that approximately 14.5% of households in the Lancashire-14 area are living in fuel poverty, equating to over 78,000 homes struggling to afford adequate heating .
Child poverty is also a critical concern. In the financial year ending 2024, GOV UK published a report evidencing that Pendle had the highest proportion of children under 16 living in relative low-income families at 45%, significantly above the UK average of 22% . Other areas in Lancashire, such as Burnley, Preston, and Blackpool, also reported over 10,000 children living in low-income families. You can read the full report from Lancashire County Council by clicking here.
Energy debt is another growing issue. As of March 2024, energy debt levels in the UK reached a record £3.3 billion, with many households in Lancashire contributing to this figure . This debt often leads to difficult choices between heating homes and other essential expenses.
These statistics highlight the urgent need for accessible energy-saving grants and support in Lancashire. By raising awareness and simplifying the application process, One Energy aims to assist residents in improving their home’s energy efficiency and reducing their energy bills.
